Effects of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids on Reproductive Processes in Dairy Cattle
نویسندگان
چکیده
Growing evidence indicates that the design and delivery of supplemental unsaturated fatty acids to the lower gut for absorption (specifically linoleic acid, linolenic acid, EPA and DHA) may target reproductive tissues to alter reproductive function and fertility. Improvement in reproductive performance involves stimulation in ovarian activity (follicle development) in the postpartum period, and possibly improved pregnancy rates due to increased production and/or decreased clearance of progesterone. Changes in follicular dynamics can be affected by fat supplementation involving potential alterations in ovarian sensitivity to metabolic hormones such as bST, insulinlike growth factor-I and gonadotrophins (LH and FSH). In bovine endometrial cells, both EPA and DHA can decrease secretion of PGF2α in vitro. In addition, the suppression of uterine prostaglandin secretion by omega-3 fatty acids has been demonstrated both during the estrous cycle and in the immediate postpartum period. Both EPA and DHA appear to be polyunsaturated fatty acids that are nutraceuticals or functional components of feeds that have a specific physiological effect, other than a purely nutritional effect. For example, EPA appears to interact with endometrial cells to stimulate steady state concentrations of PPARδ mRNA, and expression of PPARδ differed in early pregnancy (i.e., day 17) between cows treated with or without bST. In vitro, EPA interacted with the antiluteolysin, Interferon-τ, to cause an additive suppression in PGF2α secretion. Such affects may contribute to the beneficial effects of feeding fatty acids on reproductive performance.

Effect of Metabolic Stress on Ovarian Activity and Reproductive Performance of Dairy Cattle: A Review
Reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle has been decreased over the last 5 decades despite significant gains in genetic selection, improved reproductive technologies and nutritional care. In high-yielding dairy cattle, the negative energy balance (NEB) during the first week post-partum adversely affects ovarian activity, mainly follicle growth and steroidogenesis. Circulating levels of non-este...
متن کاملEffects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on ovarian function and prostaglandin secretion in lactating dairy cows
As lactating cows in severe negative energy balance have poor reproductive performance, the effect of dietary fat supplementation (fish oil, soybean oil) on PGFM secretion, ovarian function and blood metabolites is investigated. In this experiment, the effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on plasma metabolites, ovarian function and prostaglandin secretion of 20 primiparous Holstein co...
متن کاملDietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation alters the expression of genes involved in the control of fertility in the bovine uterine endometrium.
The potential for dietary supplementation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) to improve reproductive efficiency in cattle has received much interest. The mechanisms by which n-3 PUFA may affect physiological and biochemical processes in key reproductive tissues are likely to be mediated by significant alterations in gene expression. The objective of this study was to examine the ef...

In the world-wide cardiovascular diseases are the most common. And mortallities are high. Many modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases have been identified. One of them is diets. In diet polyunsaturated fatty acids such omega-3 and omega-6 have protective effects on cardiovascular health. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are essentials for humans, have taken from foods...
متن کاملTargets and procedures for altering ruminant meat and milk lipids.
Beef and dairy products suffer from a negative health image, related to the nature of their lipid fraction. Rumen lipid metabolism involves the presence of saturated lipids in ruminant tissues. Lipolysis, fatty acid biohydrogenation and formation of microbial fatty acids in the rumen and their effects on rumen outflow of fatty acids are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the formation of t...
